International Congress

The academic performance of EXPOIngeniería is intended to expose and present the achievements and progress in the main activities: energy, materials, infrastructure and logistics, information technology, and communication. The proposal is to articulate science and technology production at the planet’s physical and energetic boundaries; articulation currently unattended, but totally vital for people’s standard of living.

In the frame of EXPOIngeniería, and with the purpose of opening a space for the progress of knowledge in such activities, an International Congress will be held at “Teatro Metropolitano” attended by international experts, governmental authorities, researchers, and professionals in the field of engineering.

Energy

During the development of human race, energy has been a driving source for the material progress and improvement of the population’s life conditions. In its different forms and manifestations, energy allows transformations and evolutionary processes in nature; therefore, its utilization is indispensable and of general importance for productive activities such as agriculture, transportation, and households.

Today and in the future, energy development shows some challenges relating to diversification of energy production sources in order to assure a reliable provision for society under sustainability conditions and to assure its employment for low-income community sectors and a reasonable and efficient use in all community sectors.

To address the solution of problems resulting from the challenges described above, it is important in Colombia to achieve active participation of academic communities in the execution of research and technological development agendas with respect to such topics, as well as disclosing initiatives intended to make communities aware of their social responsibility for management and use of energy. In this context, the energy topic is addressed in EXPOIngeniería 2018 as a chance of the Engineering School, through its research groups, to disclose the results of its research works, innovations, and the scope of its research and technological development agendas and to promote social disclosing of knowledge and direct contact with communities.

Materials, Chemistry and Bioengineering

Materials have always been present in man’s life and they have been so important for man’s development that those who studied prehistory of human race divided it into three ages, naming them according to the importance of such resources: Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. If we could stop just a moment and think about what it could happen if materials developed by the man during two million years disappear, we would realize that comfort of modern life (such as housing, transportation, and electronics, among others) will also vanish. Most advances of the human race have been possible thanks to the available materials and this leads to new challenges for their development.

On the one hand, current technological development is increasingly demanding for materials with the combination of different properties; this, sometimes, is a difficult task to make since a property is generally sacrificed when another one is improved. On the other hand, raw materials required by modern man show much more restrictions for their acquisition (economic, environmental, and energetic restrictions). However, this cannot become an insuperable obstacle since it is a prevailing need to make progress equally in all such fields. In this sense, it is mandatory to clarify that technological innovations have shown a significant evolution, but environmental and energetic innovations have not been equally achieved; for this reason, it is indispensable to obtain more lasting materials and to plan their employment and final disposal in function of their degradation or elimination; this will result in more efficient recycling and use of wastes, achieving substitution of non-renewable materials.

Lecturers on Logistics and Mobility

Infrastructure, Logistics, and Mobility

Development of a country’s infrastructure is a key factor which has immediate impact on the economy and, of course, on the economic and social development. From the basic need of achieving interconnection, in all its forms and in a proper manner, different regions in Colombia should promote the internal market and domestic connection in global environments by encouraging growth of goods and services in all national economic fields.

The academic field should play a significant role in the development of domestic infrastructure, not only by providing high-quality human resources but also by developing new and better solutions for different challenges implied in the permanent construction of new infrastructure projects in sectors such as transportation, mining, energy, telecommunication, education or health, always looking for a development where available resources are respected.

Supply chains have been defined as a number of activities and processes relating to flow and transformation of products needed to meet customers’ demand for a good or a service. This means that behind any good or service we consume there is a chain of supply which scope is potentially extended to different countries and organizations. Planning and coordination of activities in such supply chain is the challenged faced by logistics. Consequently, the mission of logistics is to provide correct products or services in the correct place, at the proper time, and at the lowest price.

Competitiveness of a country, a region or an industry is frequently impacted by the performance of supply chains. Not for nothing it is affirmed that “companies do not compete anymore among them; supply chains are the ones which really do that.” It should be noted that Colombia faces important challenges for the logistic development, as shown by the World Bank’s Logistic Performance Index, where Colombia has been ranked in the 94th position among 160 countries.

Furthermore, the new technological advances, the free-trade treaties, the electronic commerce, the urbanization of population, among many other circumstances, make our supply chains to continuously adapt to an environment of permanent evolution. Finally, the climate change and, in general, the environmental impact activities of supply chains have (i.e. production, transportation, packing, etc.) make us think about developing a sustainable logistics to minimize environmental impact. For this reason, we have urban and sustainable logistics as one of the main topics to be addressed in EXPOIngeniería 2018. Within this context, the energy topic is addressed in EXPOIngeniería 2018 as a good opportunity the School of Engineering has (through its research groups) to disclose results, innovations, and scope of research and technological development agendas and to promote social disclosing of knowledge and direct contact with communities.

Information Technologies and Communications

Engineering models information technologies and communications (ITCs) and these latter in turn have an impact on engineering, communications, economy, businesses, health, security, war, privacy, politics, education, and science. It can be affirmed that there is not a known space of human activities where information technologies and communication have no influence or had not had an influence on them in a positive or negative manner.

However, information technologies and communications, just as we know them today, are only the tip of the iceberg of what is coming. This meeting in EXPOIngeniería 2018 will help us approach to the future expected to be full of challenges; a future in which engineering will be obliged to help society in a way it can be able to accept in a beneficial and sustainable manner the life of this planet’s inhabitants.
